When working at height, safety harnesses help mitigate the risk of injury in the event of a fall. A well-engineered harness will distribute the force of the fall throughout the body while keeping the worker in an upright position.

Full body harnesses require the implementation of additional fall protection devices such as self-retracting lifelines or shock absorbing lanyards in order to maintain a safe and secure connection between a worker's body and an anchor point.

The D-ring position is also key factor to consider when deciding on a safety harness. D-rings on the side, back, front or shoulders will maximize the effectiveness of positioning depending on the circumstances of the work environment.
